OTC treatment is used mainly for mild acne. There are various over the counter medications that are used preferably for the treatment of Acne and it actually contains the active ingredients listed below:
1) BENZOYL PEROXIDE: This medication is seen in form of lotions or gel. It is used mostly in mild acne; i.e at the first occurrence of acne like whitehead or blackhead acne. The treatment using Benzoyl Peroxide is one of the commonest treatment for acne, it works by killing bacteria, unclog pores, and dries out pimples. It also prevents new Acne.
NOTE: Benzoyl Peroxide should be used sparingly, because too much can harm the skin and bleach clothes.

TOPICAL MEDICATIONS
There are in form of gels, ointment or lotions and there are various topical medication that are available and this Medications have been found to be very helpful in the healing of Acne for various individuals.
Before I go on to list out these Topical Medications, I want you to know that topical acne drugs do have side effects but fortunately, the side effects are temporal and they are not very severe. The most common side effects are skin dryness and Irritation. These side effects often improve as your body gets used to the medication. But If your skin itches, burns, or peels heavily, tell your doctor immediately and a substitute of that product may be given.
Topical Medications include:
1) TRETINOIN (Retin-A) OR ADAPALENE(Differin Gel): These medicines are groups of topical retinoid derived from Vitamin A. It affects the way skin cells grow and helps prevent clogged skin pores. Adapalene can be in combination with Benzoyl Peroxide. Ensure to use as prescribed by a dermatologist.
How to apply Differin Gel perfectly: After you've washed your face gently, apply a moisturize, then apply the Differin Gel, allow it to stay for 15-20min thereafter, apply the moisturizer.
2) CLASCOTERONE: This drug is also known as Winlevi, it is a newly approved topical treatment for moderate to severe acne.It reduces acne in both males and females over the age of 12 and above. It functions by targeting the hormones that cause acne and then it blocks local androgens hormone from binding to the skin cells, thereby reducing excess oil production and inflammation. Its found that from the use of Winlevi (clascoterone) it can take up to 3 months for your skin to improve.
If your acne doesn't get better right away, it might mean that the medication needs more time to work on your skin. "REMEMBER WE ALL HAVE UNIQUE SKIN THAT'S BEST FOR US". However, if you notice your skin is not getting any better after 3 months, please discuss with your doctor or dermatologist whether you should keep using the products.
