1). Hypothyroidism (underractive thyroid): This occurs When the thyroid does not produce enough hormones, hypothyroidism occurs. Thyroid disorders frequently contribute to infertility.

 ITS EFFECTS ON FERTILITY

 i.  Irregular or absent menstrual cycles 

ii.  Anovulation (inability to release an egg) 

iii. Luteal phase defects from low progesterone levels 

iv. Elevated prolactin levels that can inhibit ovulation Women suffering from untreated hypothyroidism frequently encounter difficulties in conceiving and are at an increased risk of miscarriage. 

2). Hyperthyroidism (Overactive Thyroid): An overproduction of thyroid hormones leads to hyperthyroidism. Although less frequent than hypothyroidism, it can still substantially affect fertility.

 i. Light or infrequent menstrual periods

 ii. Hormonal imbalances disrupting ovulation 

iii. Decreased likelihood of implantation Should hyperthyroidism remain untreated, it could impede the likelihood of conception and pregnancy.

Abnormal thyroid hormone levels can reduce the ovarian's ability to respond to stimulation, affect egg quality, and disrupt embryo implantation. Numerous fertility specialists recommend keeping thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) levels within an ideal range before undergoing IVF to improve chances of success. 


HOW THYROID PROBLEMS ARE DIAGNOSED

Thyroid disorders are diagnosed through blood tests measuring:

 - TSH (thyroid-stimulating hormone) 

- Free T4 and sometimes Free T3

 - Detecting thyroid antibodies helps in identifying autoimmune conditions such as Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. Early identification enables prompt intervention and enhances reproductive success.

Fortunately, most thyroid-related fertility issues are manageable. Thyroid disorders are typically managed with synthetic thyroid hormone, such as levothyroxine, for hypothyroidism. Hyperthyroidism can be treated with medication, lifestyle modifications, or in certain cases, alternative medical interventions. Under proper care and follow-up, many women with thyroid issues can successfully become pregnant and give birth to healthy babies.
